Whangārei hapū plan for future post kāhore
Whangārei hapū are looking at where they are going in the wake of their rejection of a unified settlement for Ngāpuhi.
Spokesperson Huhana Lyndon says a hui at Terenga Paraoa Marae last week reviewed the campaign against extension of the Tūhoronuku negotiating mandate.
It also expressed a desire to look beyond treaty settlements at issues in local government and environmental impacts.
"It’s been tricky because we've had the ae and the kāhore which has divided whānau and hapū but in Whangārei we have been united in the kāhore but we need to bring all our whānau on board and look at where we are now and where we want to go so there is going to be aspiration work and a number of our hapū are focusing on the aspiration space," she says.
There will be another wānanga at Terenga Paraoa in early March to plan further the next steps towards negotiations and also look at He Whakaputanga, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and constitutional change.
