Atakohu works for the Waatea Māori-language news service. She studied journalism at Auckland Technical Institute in the late 1980s, then spent two decades in English-language news and features in Aotearoa and the United Kingdom before moving into Māori-language reporting. Atakohu holds a PhD in Māori-language journalism from Auckland University of Technology and authored the book Kia Hiwa Rā! Māori journalism in Aotearoa New Zealand (Huia, 2023).
