Paoa waka needs to move forward

The negotiator for Ngāti Paoa says he signed the Hauraki Collective deed of settlement because the waka needs to keep moving forward.
Last Friday’s signing is being challenged in the High Court by the faction controlling the post-settlement governance entity, the Ngāti Paoa Iwi Trust.
But Morehu Wilson says the iwi is at a disadvantage by not having a settlement while neighbouring iwi it has kawenata with, such as Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, are already enjoying the fruits of settlement.
"As our ancestors said, if the waka is not moving the hull of the waka will decay and there will be discontent within the crew. To me that appears to be the case. Signing the Pare Hauraki Collective deed of settlement is a way forward. It will give our people focus and it will set into motion a chain of events where we can achieve settlement for Ngāti Paoa," he says.
