The Health and Disability Commission is consulting Māori on their rights when using health and disability services.

Ikimoke Tamaki-Takaeri, the commission’s kaitohu mataamua Māori, says it’s an opportunity to influence the way the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights is interpreted and implemented.

He says the commission if looking to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practical ways. including how tikanga can be incorporated and whether there needs to be more protection for Māori written into the Act.

“This gives the opportunity to treat people with dignity and to review the code to make sure the code acknowledges people with different illnesses and acknowledges the needs and services that individuals require,” Mr Tamaki-Takerei says.

The consultation runs until the end of July. Submissions can be made here: https://www.hdc.org.nz/your-rights/review-of-the-act-and-code-2024/
