Hauraki settlement put off until election done

Tauranga Iwi Ngai Te Rangi has succeeded in its efforts to stall the signing of Hauraki’s deed of settlement.
Chair Charlie Tawhiao says he has received a letter from Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson saying it was not possible to sign the Hauraki Collective deal at this time in the absence of agreement between iwi groups.
Nga Te Rangi opposes the inclusion of properties in Te Puna and Katikati in Hauraki’s redress.
Historical records show the crown failed to deliver the reserves it promised Hauraki after the iwi was forced to sell its land there in the 1860s.
Hauraki Collective chair Paul Majurey says Ngai Te Rangi’s opposition to the settlement is dishonest and lacks mana.
He says Ngai Te Rangi signed up to the Pare Hauraki settlement in 2012 and 2014, agreeing a fair division of properties in the Katikati and Te Puna area recognising the shared interests among different iwi groups.
He says the other Tauranga iwi – Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga – have agreed to honour the agreements, but the Ngai Te Rangi leadership have mounted a protest campaign, making false claims of secret deals.
Mr Majurey says the aim seems to be to stall progress until after the election in the hope a new government would renege on the agreements.
