Tuhoronuku claims mandate holding
Ngapuhi body Tuhoronuku says 70 percent of the iwi want it to continue representing them in Treaty settlement negotiations with the Crown.
That’s based on a survey of 515 tribe members conducted by Horizon Research New Zealand in conjunction with meetings held around the country last month, after competing group Te Kotahitanga spurned invitations to sit down and map out a path back to the negotiating table.
The results of the poll were consistent with three previous Horizon surveys in 2015, 2013 and 2011.
Tuhoronuku chair Hone Sadler says 79 percent of respondents want the majority of settlement assets kept intact, while just 10 percent want assets divided up among hapu – a key Te Koitahitanga demand.
He says the continued level of support is remarkable given the years of vocal opposition from a small group of hapu and the mountains of negative media coverage they have generated
