Ngati Hako fights tip expansion

Hauraki iwi Ngāti Hako is fighting plans by Waste Management to expand a landfill between Paeroa and Te Aroha.
Spokesperson Josie Anderson says Ngāti Hako last had its fight 21 years ago to stop the tip being created in a former quarry at Tirohia, but they did have an agreement with the previous owner that once the tip was filled there would be no more.
But she says Waste Management seems to be taking advantage of the mistakes made when that agreement was expressed in a caveat on the title.
It's now up to the independent commissioners, who were sitting today to consider the resource consent, and the Hauraki District Council.
"Our view is the Hauraki District Council should clearly be saying no because of the effects this will have on Papatūānuku and on our people and further because they should be honouring the intent of the agreement made 21 years ago," Ms Anderson says.
Josie Anderson says since Waste Management bought the tip in 2016, the rate it was being filled increased massively.
