Parihaka film to show in France
A feature-length documentary about the historic Taranaki community of Parihaka has been invited to screen at a film fest in St Tropez, France.
Producer and director Paora Joseph says French audiences seem to have a genuine enthusiasm for films that portray a sense of Maori culture and spirituality.
He says it’s the first international screening for Tatarakihi: the Children of Parihaka.
The film traces the trip made by the children in 2009 to places in the South Island where their ancestors were imprisoned in the 1880s after their campaign of passive resistance to land confiscation and colonisation.
Some of the children and Parihaka kuia Maata Wharehoka will accompany Mr Joseph to the Rencontres Internationales Due Cinema Des Antipodes festival next month.
The film will also screen at a festival in Bali.
