Ancient sounds shared with shamen
Shamen in the Peruvian Amazon will soon be hearing the sounds of Māori traditional instruments.
Manawatu anthropologist and tāonga puoro player Rob Thorne is taking up an invitation to meet and work with a group of indigenous shaman.
He raised the fare for next months trip through crowd sourcing on the internet.
Mr Thorne says tāonga puoro have a deep and ancient shamanic function, and he hopes the trip will give him some insight into knowledge about their use that has been lost to colonisation and modernisation.
He will also spend time building a medical centre for locals.
A record of his compositions is due out soon on Rattle Records.
