Labour MP backs government on tougher family violence measures

Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis says Labour will support Government moves to fight family violence.
Justice Minister Amy Adams will be releasing a discussion document this week expected to include a dedicated Family Violence charge carrying higher penalties than ordinary assault changes.
Mr Davis says while he doesn't know the specifics of what the Government's proposing if its going to reduce family violence Labour will support it.
"Statistics are falling in every area except for violence and I think family violence domestic violence makes up the great measure of that. Something like half the people half the homicides in New Zealand are committed by people from within someones family. That's just unacceptable. I'm glad the government is moving on it" he says.
Mr Davis says New Zealand has the highest rate of domestic violence in the OECD and as well as increasing penalties we must look to how we rehabilitate and heal whanau including boosting Whanau Ora if need be.
