D Company pou planned for Picton foreshore
Marlborough District Council has approved a plan by Te Ātiawa to erect a 6 metre pou on the Picton foreshore to honour the 28 Māori Battalion's D Company.
The iwi hopes to have the maumahara up by November 16 in time for the Battalion Association's annual meeting.
It will stand in the centre of a circular paved area near the Picton War Memorial, which is also located on the site of Waitohi Pā on land owned by Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Maui Trust.
The names of fallen soldiers will be listed on stone slabs around the base of the pou, which will be carved to represent the four winds, Ngā Hau e Whā.
It will be topped by a flagpole.
D Company was made up of men from South Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatū, and Te Waipounamu.
