Tuuta in contest for Fonterra board seat
Outgoing Māori Trustee Jamie Tuuta has a new role in his sights but he will have to win over a majority of New Zealand’s dairy farmers to get it.
After a grueling selection process he has been named as one of three recommended candidates for a seat on the board of dairy giant Fonterra.
Two other candidates have put their names in outside the independent nomination process.
They are Canterbury dairy farmers Leonie Guiney, a former director who says she was prevented from re-contesting her seat last year when it came up by rotation, and John Nicholls.
Fonterra recently posted a $196 million loss, the first annual loss in its 17-year history.
Mr Tuuta is a former chair of Parininihi ki Waitōtara Incorporation, which has extensive dairy farming interests.
As Māori trustee he also had oversight of many dairy units around the country.
The other recommended nominees are Peter McBride, the chair of kiwifruit marketing company Zespri, and sitting director Ashley Waugh.
