Prime Minister’s State of the Nation Speech an open threat to the poorest amongst us
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told the country over the weekend in his State of the Nation Speech that New Zealand needed ‘tough love’ and cutbacks some would fund unacceptable. It is difficult taking a ‘tough love’ approach to our social woes from a multimillionaire who owns 7 properties and holidays in Hawaii. That juxtaposition is made more extreme when you consider the last week’s Government policy.
By reducing benefit rises for beneficiaries and the disabled so that National can afford their tax cuts, National will reduce payments to the disabled by $2300 per year while pushing up to 13 000 children into poverty, this is alongside the 8000 tobacco deaths and we have a Government who are actively reducing benefits and health programmes so that wealthy landlords can get more tax cuts!
It is difficult to take the Prime Minister seriously in terms of his ‘tough love’ because pushing children into poverty, taking from the disabled and allowing 8000 tobacco deaths all so wealthy Kiwis can get ore doesn;ty sound like ‘tough love’ it sound like ‘tough love for the poor, exploitation for the rich’.
Government’s have an obligation to lift everyone, not just their wealthy donors! This Government is asking the poor to pay for rich people’s tax cuts and calling that ‘democracy’.
In barely 4 months, this Government has managed to lose our collective moral compass.
