Public service job cuts confusing
A specialist Māori public service recruiter says government jobs cuts ae causing pain and confusion to whānau.
More than 3000 positions have been cut so far, including 38 jobs at the Ministry of Māori Development – Te Puni Kōkiri which were cut this week.
Russell Spratt from Tribe Group says the numbers can be hard to read because departments have bundled filled and unfilled roles in their totral.
He says many Māori roles may be statutory positions, which will give some Māori in the public sector job stability.
“While there’s some people yelling from the sidelines saying ‘get that changed, get that changed,’ you can’t do that overnight. It’ll be a very, very difficult thing to get all of that legislation changed in this country and we haven’t got time to get into that discussion,” Mr Spratt says.
