Art auction raises pūtea for Maungatautari fence

An auction of work by artists from Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and other supporters has raised more that $120,000 towards enhancing the fence around the Maungatautari eco-sanctuary.
Trust chair Linda Te Aho says as well as raising money, the gala auction was a way to keep the community connected with what is happening at the central-Waikato reserve.
She says there are now thriving populations of species like kiwi and takahe within the 47 kilometre pest-proof fence.
“We want to enhance it and improve it in order to be able to bring kakapo back to the maunga so that’s the next big initiative our whānau are working on so for Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and Maungataurari is our ancestral mountain so we will always be linked to the restoration programmes etc on the maunga,” she says.
