Williams tough when needed

Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha has paid tribute to outgoing Police Minister Poto Williams.
In the cabinet reshuffle triggered by the retirement of Kris Faafoi, the portfolio has gone to Chris Hipkins, with Ms Williams shifting to Conservation and disability issues.
Ms Williams has been under fire as a split between the Killer Beez and Tribesmen gangs has turned into a shooting war, but Mr Haumaha says any suggestion Ms Williams of Police have been soft on gangs was misplaced.
“She made her expectations very clear. The results we have achieved over the last two years during Operation Tauwhero targeting violent crimes and the firearms that enable that offending resulted in over 1300 arrests, over 1700 seizures of firearms off the streets, large quantities of drugs,” Mr Haumaha says.
He says it’s been a tough two years for any minister, but Ms Williams has responded with dignity and strength.
