Tiriti update for rest homes review
The new Commissioner for Aged Care says there is a massive change in the sector that will benefit Māori.
Carolyn Cooper says there are about 650 care, home providers, across Aotearoa looking after more than 40,000 residents.
While Māori hasn’t been big users of care homes in the past, that’s changing, and it’s being reflected in changes to the health and disability sector standards.
“The content around meeting our responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi has really focused on improving relationships with Māori but also the deliverables at the bedside around care for Māori and there’s a massive amount of changes, so that is something that is going to be phasing in over the next 18 months to two years,” Ms Cooper says.
The Health and Disabilities Commission is also looking to appoint a director Māori.
