Whānau ora support better option than eviction

The director of Kāinga Ora for Northland and Western Auckland says fewer than one percent of tenants are causing problems.
The state housing agency’s no evictions policy has been blamed for an alleged increase in bad behaviour.
But Taina Jones says such reports need to be kept in perspective.
She says more than 140 tenants have been relocated when other solutions can’t be found, but it’s not the first response.
“We try to connect them with the support they need, whether that be whānau hapū, iwi, or indeed if it’s other government organisations like Police, Oranga Tamariki, it could well be whānau ora support and other folks that can help them live well in their home at their time of need,” Ms Jones says.
She says in some of the cases reported recently Kāinga Ora hadn’t acted fast enough.
