Housing plan leaves questions for Maori
Māori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa Packer says the Government needs to spell out how its new housing policy could help Māori.
She was disappointed Associate Housing Minister Peeni Henare did not speak during yesterday’s debate pushing through some of the tax changes, and she says she can’ see any immediate relief in the package for the homeless and those waiting to get in to social housing.
She says two thirds of Māori aren’t earning enough to qualify for the assistance on offer to buy a house.
"Let's break that down. How many of those couples and how many of those single people are Māori that are going to qualify for this increase in the income gaps grant and how many of those Māori who are queuing age going to be affected by this change in the way they are going to subsidise?" Ms Ngarewa Packer says
