Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters is rejecting calls from nurses that the Government could pay them more if it wasn’t spending money on new aircraft.
Nurses this morning finished a 24 hour strike, the first work stoppage in three decades, but the Government says the $520 million package offered last week was all the money available.
Mr Peters says nurses should not try to pitch different sectors against each other, and the new Government is trying to address the massive infrastructure deficit left by nine years of National, including major shortages in police, teachers and nurses.
"All those things had to be dealt with all at once all in the first Budget and our plea to them was look, we understand, we’re sympathetic, we’re giving you the biggest rise you’ve had in 14 years, you’ve had nine years of nothing, so how should I put is a nice way, we’re sympathetic, but give us a break, we can’t do it all in one Budget," he says.
