Stellar performance from Maori astronomy show

A Māori astronomer is turning into a star, with Living by the stars – Whakamoe Tau with Professor Rangi Matamua nominated for Te Māngai Pāho Best Māori Programme and Best Reo Māori Programme in this year's New Zealand Television Awards.
The Waikato University academic says he's indebted to producers Hohepa Tuahine & Kristin Ross and Punarau Media for believing in the kaupapa when others didn't.
"When they first piloted this kaupapa they were turned down by a number of places who thought a te reo Māori programme about astronomy, that you were not going to get anyone following that, particularly if we go online on Facebook. Today we have had over a million views. It's a testament, particularly for te reo Māori, for the desire and hunger for that type of knowledge," he says.
Professor Matamua says his job is just to turn up and say the lines and share the knowledge handed down from the ancestors.
