Tahitians retrace ocean journey for Tuia 250

A Tahitian double-hulled canoe is about to set sail for Aotearoa.
The Fa'afaite will be part of a flotilla travelling around New Zealand to mark the arrival 250 years ago of Captain James Cook and the Tahitian navigator Tupaia.
Tuia 250 Flotilla kaitiaki Jack Thatcher says its two navigators will use the same practices as Tupaia and the ancestors who first voyaged to Aotearoa, using the sun, moon and stars to keep the vaka on their chosen path, as well as ocean swells and the winds as they target each island on their voyage path.
Fa'afaite will make its way to Rarotonga, where it will stop for two days, before heading to Rangitahua/ the Kermadec Islands, and then finally to Tauranga.
The public can track the vessel from its planned departure on August 20 on the Tuia 250 website.
