Whare maumahara on track for Waitangi opening

The museum being built at Waitangi to mark Māori involvement in the armed services is on track to be opened on February 5 next year.
Waitangi Limited chair Pita Paraone says after extensive consultation around the motu it was decided the museum should commemorate not just in A company of 28 Māori Battalion and its service in World War 2 but all conflicts where New Zealand has played a role.
"We are pretty confident that we will have something that does justice to those of our whanaunga who served overseas, irrespective of what arm of the services. The task for us is to ensure there is a presentation to the world of the Māori commitment to defending our shores in terms of the Treaty of Waitangi," he says.
The project has been helped with a grant form the Provincial Growth Fund.
