A whānau which has worked together to achieve their shared dream of farm ownership has triumphed again at the Ahuwhenua Māori farming competition.
Eugene and Pania King of Kiriroa Station at Matawai north west of Gisborne have won the Ahuwhenua Trophy for the top Māori sheep and beef farm in Aotearoa for 2019.
Four years ago Eugene’s sister Nukuhia and her husband Bart Hadfield won the competition, and brother Ron and his wife Justine were finalists in 2017.
The couples farmed together for several years before each taking the step up to individual farm ownership.
Organising committee chair Kingi Smiler says the King whānau has earned a unique place in the legacy of the Ahuwhenua Trophy.
He says this year’s finalists, which also included Whāngārā Farms near Gisborne and Te Awahōhonu Forest Trust – Gwavas Station west of Hastings ran farming operations which are among the best in Aotearoa.
