Cash King for Gumboot Friday
If you see a gumboot this Friday, be prepared to reach for your wallet.
New Zealander of the Year Mike King wants those gumboots full of cash.
He’s aiming to raise $2 million from the first Gumboot Friday so young people who need urgent mental health care or counselling can get it.
He says it’s a way of reducing the stigma and the financial stress if whānau want to get their rangatahi some help, but can’t wait for the public health system to find a slot.
"Basically it’s really simple. Find a counsellor or a psychotherapist or a psychologist in your area. Make a booking with them. Get them to email us at invoice@gumbootfriday.com. We check out their credentials to make sure they are a legit business and as soon as they are we pay the bill. Real real simple," Mr King says.
People can take their cash-filled gumboot at any Kiwibank, of they can donate through Givealittle
