On behalf of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust Board we are proud to announce Peggy Luke-Ngaheke, Hoana McMillian and Rāniera Procter elected as Trustees of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust.
This is certainly an exciting time in our history, and we are confident that these members will
provide ideas, knowledge and strategic vision necessary to advance the movement and further
build upon our distinguished reputation across the nation and around the world.
Peggy Luke-Ngaheke has been instrumental in Kōhanga Reo, supporting the first language nest Pukeatua at her mārae Waiwhetu, she has held many roles across the movement and brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge, a kuia in the kaupapa, she believes as the movement moves into its fourth decade, changes must be made to retain and grow our kaupapa.
Hoana McMillian is a product of Te Kōhanga Reo o Rotokawa, as a Manu Pīrere she followed on to Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Koutu and then onto Waikato University where she is currently lecturing. She is in the process of completing her PHD with her research centring on what she holds dear, Te Kōhanga Reo and its positive impact on whānau. Her mother Leah has long been a pillar in her rohe and her children are all graduates of, or are attending, Kōhanga Reo.
Rāniera has served on the Board for the last five years to bring positive outcomes for Kōhanga Reo. Highlights include moving the Wai Claim forward and for the last two years he has served as Co-Chair alongside Dame Tariana Tūria. The ultimate aim for Rāniera remains the retention of our reo and tikanga, and the retention and growth of tamariki in kōhanga reo.
We the Board wish to thank all the candidates and Kōhanga whānau that engaged in the process, we saw a strong voter return of 73.26% which speaks to the whānau commitment to having a voice at the table.
