Hapū keen to set new agenda
Kaikohe hapū have called a hui for all Ngapuhi in January to plan the next steps in gaining a mandate to negotiate on behalf of the iwi.
A majority of the hapu hui held over the past month refused to endorse a variation of the Tūhoronuku mandate that would have allowed talks to resume with a central body negotiating commercial redress and hapū clusters discussing cultural redress.
The final count will be known next week, and it's unsure what the government response will be, especially if the poll of individual Ngāpuhi members comes up with a different result to the hapū vote.
Te Uri o Hua kaumātua Ted Wihongi says the result is undeniable and is a reflection of the hapū standing in their own power.
The hui will be held at Kohewhata Marae on January 19.
