Hawaiki cable opens fast connection to north
The head of Northland Inc says the lighting up of a new undersea fibre optic cable could unlock the potential of Taitokerau and its people.
The Hawaiki cable connecting the United States west coast, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia means there is now competition to the older Southern Cross cable through which this country’s internet traffic flowed.
David Wilson says Northland Inc is pleased the cable lands at Mangawhai, which should stimulate interest from businesses wanting to use its 43 terabit per second capacity.
That could include high bandwidth users like film production.
"I think it’s got other benefits as well around health and education if you can think about managing chronic illnesses from distance via video conferencing and the like. Marae connectivity is another example. Those sorts of opportunities mean people could have more opportunity to live in different places if they wish," Mr WIlson says.
Advance customers for the Hawaiki cable include Amazon Web Services, Vodafone, and Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand.
