Licensed drivers on the straight and narrow
The Howard League for Penal Reform is today celebrating the second year of its driving programme aimed at steering young people away from a life of crime.
Chief executive Mike Williams says more than 200 offenders and ex-prisoners have been through its Waitakere-based programme, which costs about at much as keeping one person in prison for a year.
Many have gone on to find jobs.
He says 65 percent of Maori offenders have a driving offence as part of their initial jail sentence and about 5 percent of jail sentences are just for driving without a licence.
Over 80 percent of all entry level jobs now require a drivers’ licence.
