Vodafone backing tika pronunciation

Vodafone is giving New Zealanders a chance to correct the way Google Maps pronounces Maori place names.
They’ll be able to go on the Say it Tika website at sayittika.co.nz to report any machine-driven mispronunciation.
Consumer director Matt Williams says the mobile phone company connects millions of New Zealanders to Google Maps every year and supporting Google to improve pronunciation in Aotearoa is an important way it can play a part in preserving the taonga that te reo Maori is.
He says the exercise should create a priority list for updates, which will be worked through in consultation with Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori.
Maori Language Commission chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says it’s a great campaign, and the corrections should start flowing through millions of phones from late this year.
