TPP too risky for Maori Party

The Maori Party intends to vote against New Zealand joining the TPP.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Amendment Bill was introduced in Parliament yesterday after the government cut short a preliminary select committee investigation.
Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says the party is swayed by the Waitangi Tribunal’s view the TPP could have a chilling effect on the Crown’s ability to meet its Treaty obligations.
He agrees with the tribunal finding that the Treaty exception clause allowing the Government to take measures that favour Maori may not work in practice.
Co-leader Marama Fox says previous free trade agreements haven’t benefitted all of society, as can be seen from rising levels of poverty and homelessness.
She says free trade needs to also be fair trade.
