Greenpeace seeks boat to take on seismic blaster

Greenpeace is crowd funding to buy a boat to confront the world’s biggest seismic blasting ship, the Amazon Warrior, as it searches for oil off the East Coast of the North Island.
New Zealand executive director Russel Norman says it’s part of a widespread campaign to kick Statoil and Chevron out of New Zealand that also includes Te Ikaroa, a group representing more than 80 hapu from along the lower east coast of the North Island.
Last week traditional Maori voyaging canoe, Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti, intercepted the ship to deliver a message telling it to go away.
Mr Norman says it’s time to go to sea again with more people in a vessel that can stay out longer.
He says the government and industry continue to put profits above people’s lives, even in the knowledge that not a single new oil well, gas field or coal mine can operate anywhere if we are to avoid a climate catastrophe.
