Job initiative to tautoko rangatahi

Employment Minister Willie Jackson has announced a $13 million initiative to tackle youth unemployment in the regions.
He Poutama Rangatahi will focus on Te Tai Tokerau, eastern Bay of Plenty, Tairawhiti and Hawke’s Bay where there are large numbers of youth not in employment, education or training.
The money will support communities to help connect young people to real jobs identified by employers and those communities.
Mr Jackson says fundamental to this approach will be building a kete of pastoral care around individuals, reflecting the hinaki model from te ao Maori where different strands of local resources are woven to build a net of tautoko that is hard to slip out of.
He says the crisis of entrenched unemployment is real for many rangatahi and their communities.
Getting youth work ready will also ensure they can take advantage of new job opportunities created though the Government’s increased regional investment.
