Indigenous centre has world view
The director of Massey University’s new global centre for indigenous leadership expects international interest in the idea.
Professor Selwyn Katene says Maori have a need for educated and informed leadership.
They also have knowledge and experience they can share, because of the way New Zealand has been a sort of social laboratory.
A priority will be to identify likely partners and build a global network.
"What we have in common with other indigenous people are our values. Manaakitanga we don't have a patent on being a compassionate caring people, same as arohanui, the importance of having resepct for the people you work with. That's a common factor of a number of indigenous people who have great leaders over there as well," he says.
Professor Katene moves into his new role at the end of the month, with scientist Dr Charlotte Severne moving over from Lincoln University to replace him as Massey’s Assistant Vice-Chancellor Maori and Pasifika.
