Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and Otakou kaumatua Edward Ellison travelled to Parihaka today to discuss how the historical relationship between the two centres can be acknowledged and enhanced.
The visit was triggered by the Dunedin council’s intervention in a Trademe auction of manacles purported to have once shackled Maori prisoners in a cave lock-up on the Otago foreshore in the 1870s and 80s.
Parihaka spokesperson Ruakere Hond says while analysis of the manacles showed they were made later and probably to restrain camels, the incident did focus attention on events that are still remembered in Taranaki and Otepoti.
"It’s definitely a strong part of the history of Dunedin they look at key features, geographical features, Maori roads, churches, the foundation for the university, the Octagon, the earthworks that were put in place so that those things could be built were largely done by the prisoners of Pakakohi and the prisoners from Parihaka," says Dr Ruakere Hond.
