More seats vital for survival
The new Maori Party president says his job is to position the party to have the best hand it can play after the next election.
Tukoroirangi Morgan says the Maori Party is the only one that can offer an authentic voice for Maori and that must be its message to voters.
It also means it must be ready to work with any other party to improve the quality of life for Maori people.
He says the last election, when National got enough seats to govern alone, was unusual, and the party needs to prepare for coalition.
So we’re not going to make any decision on who we are going to work with before the election. What I do intend to do is to make sure our party is in a position to negotiate, that we will have enough seats to negotiate the best agreement, even if that best agreement is in opposition. We'll play as the cards fall," he says.
Tukoroirangi Morgan says before he was pushed by his brother in law Tau Henare into standing for New Zealand First in 1996 he was courted by the Labour Party but he never entertained the prospect.
