Iwi angry Smith about face, then faceless

South Taranaki iwi Ngati Ruanui is demanding the immediate resignation of Corrections CEO Ray Smith and an apology from Minister Judith Collins over the sacking of Ngapari Nui as a kaiwhakamana at Whanganui Prison.
The iwi was angry Mr Smith sent a commissioner to a hui at Hawera yesterday to discuss the issue rather than fronting up himself.
Spokesperson Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says Mr Nui was appointed by Mr Smith after consultation with the iwi, and it sets a dangerous precedent for him to be sacked because of pressure from the Sensible Sentencing lobby group.
Ms Collins has defended the sacking, saying she is not prepared to have gang members like Mr Nui working in her prisons.
