Stoat war in Golden Bay

Golden Bay iwi Manawhenua ki Mohua is teaming up with the Department of Conservation and Air New Zealand Golden Bay’s Manawhenua ki Mohua iwi to bring back birds to the Abel Tasman Great Walk.
The project focuses on stoat control in the north of the national park and intensive rat control around the Totaranui camp ground.
DOC director-general Lou Sanson says Totaranui is one of DOC’s busiest camp grounds with over 17,000 overnight visitors a year.
He says once predators are reduced, other species can be introduced to encourage forest and wetland bird species to increase in number.
Air New Zealand has also funded conservation projects along the Milford, Routeburn, Lake Waikaremoana and Rakiura great walks.
