Kaumatua on Iron Maori track
A recycled teenagers’ club is how IronMaori founder Heather Skipworth described today’s first Kaumatua Iron Maori event at Napier’s Pandora Pond.
The event was designed as a series of walking and swimming events for Maori over 55, as a way of instilling the healthy lifestyle kaupapa.
Ms Skipworth says it was a bit of a turnaround from the way kaumatua are usually treated at such events.
"Once you start getting into kaumatua status your kids and grandkids expect you to be a sideline koro or nanny looking after the moko, so today the parents looked after their own moko watching the kaumatua participate," she says.
Ms Skipworth says the oldest kaumatua attending was close to 90.
