Walker gave language to fight back
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the late Dr Ranginui Walker gave her the language to describe what it felt like as a Maori to live in a racist country.
Ms Turei studied under Dr Walker at Auckland University and continued her association into politics.
"He was able to describe why it was like this and how it should be different and how we could make it different at a time when for me in the 80s and early 90s it was incredibly hard and it was really confusing, so he gave us this language and these tools to be able to fight back. I will forever love him forever for that," she says.
Maori Television is livestreaming the tangihanga for Dr Ranginui Walker from Orakei Marae today and the funeral tomorrow.
