Water rent will pay for clean-up
Labour wants to introduce a resource rental on water used for irrigation as part of its plan to clean up the nation’s freshwater inside a generation.
Water spokesperson Meka Whaitiri says a Labour Government would ensure all New Zealand’s water lakes and rivers are swimmable, fishable and suitable for food gathering.
She says the use of water for irrigation is a privilege, not an inalienable right, and a resource rental is the best tool for making sure fresh water is used efficiently.
Meka Whaitiri says Labour will introduce a National Policy Statement to clean up dirty rivers and lakes based on the principles identified by an inquiry into freshwater manager led by retired Environment Court judge David Sheppard that was shelved by National.
