A whitewashed NZ flag without Maori
A whitewashed NZ flag without Maori
MARTYN BRADBURY
The public have spoken and a glorified Weet-Bix packet clone of a corporate sports logo has become the only contender to go up against our existing flag.
Personally I've seen the entire flag debate as a manufactured political distraction that Key has cleverly used whenever the Government needs the media to focus on something else other than their policy. The process to select a new flag was a flop, the panel chosen to decide it were all politically picked and Key's preference for the All Blacks logo robbed the discussion of the cultural, philosophical and artistic credibility it required to be successful.
The blue, black, silver fern design has managed to wipe any trace of Maori from our national symbol. Admittedly the Butcher's Apron of the Union Jack is hardly representative of Maori either, but to whitewash Maori out of a new flag option altogether seems driven by less altruistic desires.
The NZ Police admitted recently that they have an 'unconscious bias' against Maori, this flag with zero nods towards the first people of Aotearoa could happily fly above Police National Headquarters.
