Tamaki Makaurau iwi keen on waka fest

The mana whenua iwi of Tamaki Makaurau are excited at the chance to show off their marine culture at a new festival starting next year.
The first Tamaki Herenga Waka Festival will be held at Queen’s Wharf and on the harbour over the Auckland Anniversary weekend starting January 30.
Hauauru Rawiri, the chair of the festival’s mana whenua steering group, says it’s a true partnership with the Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development agency.
He says the place Tamaki was always a hub of cultural, social and economic activity which brought tribes together.
"The festival will affirm the mana whenua of Tamaki Makaurau in another platform to showcase, to manaaki, care for, tohatoaha, share, kia tuwherahia te tomokanga, to open the gate to the world, to share our stories korero tuku iho, hononga, tikanga me te reo Maori, people, place and culture," Mr Rawiri says.
