Long way to go for Smokefree Aotearoa

A long term Maori anti smoking advocate says while Maori smoking rates are tracking well, there is a long way to go to be ready for a smokefree Aotearoa by 2025.
Shane Bradbrook from Te Ao Marama was at the recent Maori Affairs select committee hearing, where representatives from the Ministry of Health made comment on their initiatives to reduce Maori smoking rates.
He says there is not enough resource being directed at Maori smokfree initiatives, and the ministry has failed to adhere to the many recomendations made to address the problem.
Mr Bradbrook says a positive is the way new Maori Party co leader Marama Fox has taken up the challenge, now that strong political Maori smokefree champions Tariana Turia and Hone Harawira are no longer in the house.
