Ngati Kuri prepare for signing

Northernmost iwi Ngati Kuri has completed its treaty settlement negotiation and will sign its deed of settlement on February 7.
Ngati Kuri Trust Board chair Harry Burkhardt says the deed will be signed at Te Rerenga Wairua or Cape Reinga, to acknowledge the many ancestors who have made the journey to that spot waiting for the day.
The settlement involves cultural redress, historical rederess and commercial redress as well as an apology from the Crown for not having honoured its obligations and responsibilities under the Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
It also involves the return of one of the single largest tracts of Department of Conservation managed land so far in a settlement.
Ngati Kuri is the fourth Muriwhenua iwi to sign off, with only Ngati Kahu still holding out.
