Northern region district health boards are teaming up with iwi and Māori health providers to hire up to 120 new community health workers to support whānau wellbeing during and after the COVID-19 outbreak.
Waitematā DHB chief executive Dale Bramley says the mission of the new Ngā Kaimanaaki service is to ensure whānau are safe, protected and well in their homes and communities.
The Northland, Waitematā, Auckland and Counties Manukau DHBS will work with providers including Te Whānau O Waipareira, Te Whare Tiaki Trust, Ōrakei Health and Ngāti Hine Health Trust, to employ community leaders and members to boost the DHBs’ existing Māori health workforce.
The kaimanaaki will identify whānau who may require additional support and then coordinate that care or help them to access the services.
The kaimanaaki will also provide relevant information about COVID-19, offering guidance to whānau around protecting themselves against infection and giving advice about how to stay well in their homes by building healthy habits for the whole whānau.
