Internal tests help tauira through lockdown NCEA
A leading Māori educator says while there may be some catching up needed, most senior students in Māori medium schools will start the year in a good position.
NCEA results for more than 160,000 students have now been posted online, reflecting a year in which many students had to study remotely.
Rawiri Wright, the co-chair of Te Rūnanga o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori, says while he’s still waiting on the analysis, indications are the overall quality of passes is higher than before the pandemic.
He says most kura gave students the option of skipping external exams, and the reality is most of the credits needed for a pass can be gained through internal assessment.
“UE students need 14 credits or more in three approved subjects. Most of those can be achieved through doing internals. The externals are sort of the icing on the cake. I don’t believe students have been short-changed and I don’t believe it will be a blot on their learning record,” Mr Wright says.
