Meta take on Atua Māori
Māori gods will stand alongside Asia-Pacific trade leaders at this years virtual APEC Summit thanks to augmented-reality.
Māori tech company Arataki Systems has been commissioned by Meta, formerly known as Facebook, to create Ngā Atua Māori, an AR experience that tell the Māori creation story through 3D rendered models of Tāne, Tangaroa, Tūmatauenga, Tāwhirimatea and Rūaumoko.
Founder Lee Timutimu says she’s worked with Māori storytellers’ collective Te Reo Wainene o Tua to ensure the elements of the story were tika.
“It’s second nature to hear these stories but for non-Māori, especially those living outside New Zealand, it’s new stuff so we really had to focus on relaying or conveying the stories without losing the messaging, without losing the fullness of the story or the narrative,” Mr Timutimu says.
Ngā Atua Māori is available on Instagram @NEXT.
