Boarding schools look to Australia
Māori boarding schools are looking to Australia as a source of students to rebuild their rolls.
The principals of Hawkes Bay schools Hukarere Girls College and Te Aute College have welcomed new leadership scholarships that will pay the tuition and boarding fees for 15 pupils at each of the six schools.
Te Aute principal Piripi Blake says the schools deliver excellent results by focusing on academic and sporting success in a unique Māori environment that connects students with their language and culture.
He says that’s a reason a growing number of Māori parents living in Australia choose to send their children to the schools.
He says that trend is set to grow as the value of culture in the development of young people is recognised more widely.
