Stars not bright lights in Waikaremoana haven
The manager of the Waikaremoana Tribal Authority says a new headquarters on the lake will allow the hapu to better manaaki tourists and other visitors.
The authority has commissioned Wellington architects Tennent and Brown to design a living building along the lines of parent iwi Tuhoe’s Te Kura Whare in Taneatua.
Lorna Taylor says it will embody tribal values and be a space for creativity and engagement with manuhiri in a very special setting.
"You won’t find any bright lights here. You'll find stars and get a feel for nature, get to learn more about your country and the people that live inside it. We're here, Tuhoe, waiting to embrace you, look after you. I think those are good reasons to come down to Waikaremoana," she says.
The building should be completed by the end of 2016 using a mix of outside and local labour.
